Ukraine reduced energy imports
In 2024, Ukraine imported fuel and energy products worth $8.9 billion, which is $1.47 billion or 14.2% less than in 2023. This was reported by the analytical center DiXi Group, citing Energy Map data.
At the same time, export revenues decreased almost by half - from $0.39 billion to $0.2 billion. Expenditures on imported energy resources exceeded export earnings by 44 times.
As stated in the report, in 2024, energy imports consisted mainly of the purchase of oil and oil products, which accounted for 76.6% in monetary terms. Smaller shares were accounted for by electricity and petroleum gases (7.5% each) and coal (4.5%). Other energy resources, including coke, bitumen, peat, resins, oils and other refined products, together accounted for up to 3.9% of total import expenditure.
In 2024, Ukraine imported 7.56 million tons of oil and oil products (except crude) worth $6.82 billion, which is 12.9% less than in 2023.
0.98 million tons of oil gases were imported, which cost Ukraine $0.67 billion. This is almost three times less than was spent in 2023 - $1.9 billion.
The largest increase compared to 2023 was recorded in electricity imports. If in 2023 Ukraine received 806.4 thousand MWh worth $154.7 million, then in 2024 the volume of expenses increased more than fourfold - to $669.4 million for 4436.6 thousand MWh.
Expenses on coal imports more than doubled compared to 2023. During 2024, Ukraine spent $402.1 million on the purchase of 1.8 million tons of coal.
However, according to DiXi Group, Ukraine exported 12 types of fuel and energy products to 103 countries during 2024, which provided cash receipts in the amount of $201.3 million.
In the export structure, the largest share was occupied by the sale of electricity, which amounted to $81.0 million or 40.3% of receipts.
Revenue from the sale of coal amounted to $36.4 million (18.1%), oil and oil products — $29.1 million (14.4%). Other fuel and energy products, such as oil gases, peat, resins, coke, pitch, bituminous mixtures, together brought Ukraine $54.8 million — 27.2% of all revenues.
